Solar Installer Checklist
Installing a solar system is a major venture for a homeowner or business. Before you choose an installer, ask the key questions below and make sure you’re comfortable with the answers before you proceed.
Questions to ask your solar installer:
- How long have you been in business?
- Do you have references from satisfied clients?
- Is the work/equipment guaranteed? What does your guarantee cover?
- Is there a location where I can see the products at work and talk to a knowledgeable installer?
- Who will take care of building and electrical permits and inspections?
- Does the installation include all electrical work, including a new meter base and coordination with the local utility?
- Who will take care of the FIT/MicroFIT application with the Ontario Power Authority?
- Are your installers certified? If so, by whom?
- Do your installers belong to industry associations, such as the Canadian Solar Industry Association (CANSIA) or Ontario Sustainable Energy Association (OSEA)?
- Is your company insured? What are your liability limits if there is a problem?
- Can you supply a wide range of solutions and equipment from different manufacturers?
- Does your quote include engineering review for snow/wind load calculations?
- Will roof upgrades be required? If so, who will perform them?
- What is included in your site assessment?
- Do you conduct a site visit? A shading analysis?
- Are there additional charges for site visits or analysis?
